VINTAGE TRAIN DAY - Saturday 3 March @ Trainworks Talking about the Vintage Train Day, Chairman of the Thirlmere Festival of Steam organising committee Peter Berriman said, “The Saturday event is great for kids - it’s a novel and educational outing, for affordable family fun. And for people who remember the era when everyone travelled by steam train, a bit of nostalgia.” “There’ll be a busy program of passenger and mixed goods trains operating throughout the day on the Thirlmere Heritage Railway. You can take a steam train ride, see up to four steam locomotives in action, take photos, and even climb aboard a full size steam locomotive to meet the driver, feel the heat of the fire and learn about the locomotive’s controls. And of course you can explore Trainworks – Australia’s newest rail heritage showcase.” “You have a choice of three train journeys to choose from: First, there’s the Heritage Train from Thirlmere to Buxton and return, travelling in classic early 1900s style, with four trips scheduled, departing at 10.45am, noon, 1.15pm and 2.30pm. A train of 100-year-old carriages will hauled by a variety of steam locos throughout the day.” “Then there are two special mixed goods trains, just like the small branch-line trains that used to ply most country areas in the state – a rustic return to the lifeblood of rural NSW railways. This train departs at 9.30 am and 3.45 pm. You’ll need to get in early for this one though as the number of seats is strictly limited. You’ll experience a long-forgotten style of rail travel, as you settle back into an exquisitely restored and spacious 1899 built Pullman lounge car and enjoy the clickety-clack & rattle of the four-wheel freight wagons as your branch-line goods locomotive chugs into the past. And a special photo stop at Couridjah Station will allow you to record this rare-recreation journey.” “Last but not least, the ‘Thirlmere Flyer’ will operate from Campbelltown to Thirlmere and return, so you can leave the car, and travel to Thirlmere by steam train. The Flyer departs Campbelltown at 10.10 am and arrives at Thirlmere at 11.25 am, departing at 3 pm and arriving back at Campbelltown at 4.30 pm. It’s a great way to get to the Vintage Train Day, travelling in 1930s style on a nostalgic journey through the scenic foothills of the Southern Highlands. And once you get to Thirlmere, you can visit Trainworks to explore NSW’s largest collection of heritage trains and enjoy the host of Vintage Train Day attractions.” “Don’t forget though, to travel on the Thirlmere Flyer steam train, you must book in advance. You can book on-line at www.heritageexpress.com.au, or phone 02 9379 1110 for more information or bookings.” |

THIRLMERE FESTIVAL OF STEAM - Sunday 4 March @ Thirlmere Village The annual Thirlmere Festival of Steam, now in its 23rd year, is bigger and better than ever! Organising committee Chairman Peter Berriman said, “You really can ‘go loco for a day!’ This is the big day, as Thirlmere village comes alive with steam machinery and historic vehicles, food, music, entertainment, market stalls, amusement rides, model rail displays, and of course the gala street parade. And it’s a great day to visit Trainworks to experience a living museum amongst the largest display of heritage trains in NSW.” “You can enjoy a wide selection of eateries, and let the kids ‘go loco’ on the mini steam train rides. All the fun fair rides will be there, or perhaps a Harley trike ride or helicopter joy flight is more your style. There’ll be music in the park all day, showcasing our local musical talent, and you can browse over 150 market stalls. Make sure you get your spot for the gala street parade at 1 pm and bring your camera too.” “And of course, the highlight for most is to take a ride on a steam train on the Thirlmere Heritage Railway. Frequent shuttle journeys depart Thirlmere Station throughout the day, from 9.45 am, and you can buy your tickets on the day, just next to Thirlmere Station.” “For the Festival of Steam on the Sunday, you can travel from Sydney or Campbelltown by steam train on the ‘Thirlmere Flyer’. Yes, it avoids the parking hassles, but it’s an adventure in itself, and a great family day trip, as you steam out of the city to Thirlmere village, home of the state’s rail heritage, situated in the beautiful Wollondilly Shire. You can relax in 1930s style as the locomotive huffs and puffs through the suburbs while you open the window by your seat and enjoy the sights, sounds and smells of steam.” “I’d like to remind patrons that to travel on the Thirlmere Flyer steam train, you need to book in advance. Discounted fares are available if travelling from Campbelltown. The Flyer departs Sydney Terminal at 10 am, picking up at Revesby at 10.35 am and Campbelltown at 11 am. Arrival at Thirlmere is at 12.10 pm. Departure from Thirlmere is at 3.50 pm, arriving back at Campbelltown at 4.50 pm, Revesby at 5.20 pm and Sydney Terminal at 5.50 pm. You can book on-line at www.heritageexpress.com.au, or phone 02 9379 1110 for more information or bookings.” |
