When The Old Machinery Magazine caught up with Mark Burton at the 2022 Queensland Heritage Rally at Kingaroy, his restored, rare, 8hp James Martin engine immediately had our attention. Mark first became intrigued with the Sydney-built James Martin engines when he acquired a small version right at the beginning of his obsession with collecting machinery though he did sell this on a short time later, not realising how rare they were. Some years later, he set out to find another one which took some time. When he was told about a 100-year-old, 8hp, portable, governed, hit and miss engine that had laid in a creek bed on a farm near Orange, NSW, for many years, he didn’t hesitate to purchase it, despite its dilapidated condition. With its 26” diameter x 2¼” thickness flywheels, a 4½” bore, and a 19” stroke, it has taken Mark 2½ years to restore.
